Courage In The Spotlight
Courage in the Spotlight: Lessons from Facing an Audience 🎤
🌸
I can still remember the very first time I faced an audience—it was at the tender age of eight. I was asked to sing the hymn, “My Faith Looks Up to Thee.” At that time, I didn’t fully understand what it meant to sing before a crowd. I was nervous, shy, and unsure if my little voice could be heard.
But even then, the song spoke to me. The words were simple, yet powerful: “My little faith looks up to Thee.” Little did I know, those words would stick with me for life. That hymn wasn’t just about singing in front of people—it was about surrender, courage, and looking beyond myself.
As I grew older, I reflected on that first experience and realized what it had truly taught me. The little faith I had at eight was looking up to the Lamb of Calvary—Jesus—who faced the greatest stage of all: the cross. He was surrounded by a crowd, mocked and beaten, yet He never wavered. He never feared being hanged on a tree, because He knew He was doing the Father’s work.
Every time I climb a stage now, whether to sing, speak, or testify, I remember that little Lamb. I remember that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the decision to trust God despite it. Like David said in Psalm 23:4:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Standing before an audience can be intimidating. The eyes of many, the judgment, the silence, or even the applause—it can shake a young heart or a timid soul. But when I remember Christ, I realize it’s not about me. It’s about Him. It’s about faith, obedience, and lifting His name high, no matter the crowd.
The hymn’s words remind me that no matter how small my faith feels, when it is directed to God, it is powerful. Like Peter stepping out of the boat in Matthew 14:29:
“So he got out of the boat and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”
My little faith, then and now, is enough when it is focused on the One who is greater.
That first hymn planted a seed in my heart—a courage that grows every time I face a crowd. It taught me to lean not on my own ability, but on God’s presence, and to remember that even the Lamb of God faced a world full of eyes and still fulfilled His purpose.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
Today, I step onto stages, in front of audiences, and even when my heart races or my voice shakes, I know I am not alone. My little faith looks up to Him, the Lamb of Calvary, who shows me that courage comes from surrender, trust, and love for God’s purpose.
